WHAT IS THE MATEY INSTITUTE?
When Highbury Women's Institute turned us away we went home rejected, dejected, licking our wounds. We wailed, we chewed our nails, we felt we'd failed. But we got over it soon enough, and made a club of our own. Men would be allowed and nobody would ever be turned away so long as they were nice and Matey!
We think of ourselves as a radical breakaway alternative to the Women’s Institute. Our group is similar in that we have a leaning towards arts and crafts, and we love jam. But our workshops are richer for their gender integration and embracing of all ages.
The Matey Institute is a monthly skill sharing group, free to join and open to all. The groups are different every time, and the subject matter has been wildly varied - from knitting to kung fu to willow basket weaving. Every class is held by someone from within the group and every time a new person joins, our skills-base increases. But there is no pressure to share a skill if you don’t fancy it.
Please let us know if you want to be a member of this exciting new movement. We look forward to hearing from you.
